Fitzhead’s annual Fete and Flower Show, on the Saturday closest to July 25 (St James Day), is a genuinely traditional event, held in the idyllic setting of Fitzhead Cricket Ground. It has built up an enviable reputation, and each year visitors come from far and wide for a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon.
There is a host of activities for every age group on offer, including sitting down to delicious cream teas or homemade cake; children’s games and races; stalls with bargains in everything from books to crafts, jams to cakes to bric-a-brac. There is also a beer tent, prizewinning flowers, cakes, photographs and other displays to view in the Flower Show tent, a barbecue, a grand raffle and, in recent times, brass band music from Wiveliscombe Town Band, a ducking stool, and more.
The fete and flower show goes back decades, and the community spirit that makes it such a success, ensures welcome funds are raised to help support St James Church and the community Tithe Barn.
The weekend of the fete also sees festivities continuing the next day with a fun Duck Race and teas at Holcombe Farm, with all proceeds going towards the Fete and Flower Show.
The fete is held by kind permission of the Shapland family and Fitzhead Cricket Club, which organises its fixtures around the fete date.
