Fitzhead Village

Janet Weeks, Master Jam and Chutney maker

Not many people can say they made over 2,000 bottles of jam and chutney in recent years, but Fitzhead ‘s Janet Weeks has clocked up that and more, in aid of the village fete.
Once again for this year’s fete on Saturday July 27, the cauldron is simmering in her kitchen and Janet will have made over 300 jars since last year’s event, after she first started on the stall in 2018. She usually takes in over £600 towards fete earnings, which support Fitzhead church and Tithe Barn. Visitors come from all over to buy her jams and chutneys – even one from New Zealand last year. She told Janet it was her second visit and she had come all the way for her four jars!

“I enjoy the fete day more and more,” said Janet. “I get stressed getting everything in boxes and up to the cricket ground, especially if it’s raining, but once the punters come I really enjoy it, and the little comments from people make it all worthwhile.”
She uses recipes from everywhere, including two favourite books, but Janet loves to experiment with flavours. She also loves spices, and creates mixes like plum and cardamom jam; marmalade with rum, ginger and lime; ginger, garlic and apple chutneys and even tomato chilli jam. “A lot of people like that one, except for the extreme chilli-heads, so I upped the chillies last year for them.”
Janet said she could not make all she does without the support of fellow villagers. Fruit flows in from various people, as well as sugar donations, and boxes and bags full of empty jars.
“I hugely appreciate it, I feel I have a lot of people on my side and it has kept me going.”

This may, however, be Janet’s last event. Catch her at Fitzhead Fete on Saturday July 27, Fitzhead Cricket Ground, from 2 – 4.30pm, along with a host of other popular stalls, cream teas and barbecue, beer tent,
