Fitzhead Village in Somerset

About the Tithe Barn

About the Tithe Barn

Dating probably from the middle of the 14th century it was believed to have been the Church House where dignitaries would meet, and the Parish Church business was conducted (including the brewing of the strong Church Ale).  The layout of the Tithe Barn was altered in Victorian times, and a new roof was put on the Barn in 2010 with the aid of grants from TDBC and Somerset County Council.
The Tithe Barn is owned by the Diocese of Bath and Wells, but in 1984 was leased to the Tithe Barn Management Committee for a period of 56 years (2040).
The TBMC is a registered Charity and its members are trustees of the Charity.  It is responsible for ensuring compliance with the lease agreement by keeping the premises and its fixtures and fittings in good repair and condition.
The Tithe Barn is in a Conservation Area but it is not a listed building.  It currently costs just under £3000 a year to keep the Tithe Barn running, and we just about cover that through hire costs, with a bit of help from monies received from the Fitzhead Fete.
It is the policy of the TBMC to make the hall as accessible as possible for communal village events, (e.g. craft group, coffee mornings, village events & functions, village meetings) and for private hire by villagers for functions etc. and hire charges for village use are kept to a minimum.  The Tithe Barn is also available for hire to non-Villagers for functions.
